La ville, dot\u00e9e d'une\r\nuniversit\u00e9, est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour son \u00e9cole de musique et Karl\r\nSchroeder en garde le souvenir de c\u00e9l\u00e9brations d'\u00e9t\u00e9 et d'un\r\nfestival annuel de films.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\nSes jeunes ann\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s marqu\u00e9es\r\npar son \u00e9ducation memmonite (comme Alfred E. Van Vogt) et\r\nprogressiste. De sa m\u00e8re, autrice de romans, il a h\u00e9rit\u00e9 le go\u00fbt\r\nde la lecture et de l'\u00e9criture. Il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9crire \u00e0 14 ans\r\net achev\u00e9 son premier roman \u00e0 17. Cette passion s'est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e\r\nau d\u00e9triment de sa scolarit\u00e9 qu'il a abandonn\u00e9e \u00e0 la m\u00eame\r\n\u00e9poque. Il a n\u00e9anmoins fini par obtenir son GED (General\r\nEducational Development, certificat canadien d'\u00e9quivalence \r\nd'\u00e9tudes universitaires).<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\nEn 1986, il s'est install\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto o\u00f9\r\nil a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la renaissance de la SF et de la fantasy qui y\r\navait alors lieu. Il fut un des membres fondateurs de SF Canada \r\navant d'en devenir le pr\u00e9sident.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\nEn 1988, il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la fondation\r\ndes Cecil Street Irregulars dont le mentor \u00e9tait Judith Merrill et\r\nqui a compt\u00e9 parmi ses membres Cory Doctorow et Peter Watts. C'est\r\ndans ce cadre qu'il a publi\u00e9 son premier roman en 1997, <i>The Claus\r\nEffect<\/i>, \u00e9crit en collaboration avec David Nickle.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\nC'est cependant \u00e0 partir du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000 qu'il \r\ns\u2019est mis \u00e0 publier ses romans les plus importants.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\n\u00c0 peu pr\u00e8s \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque, il a \u00e9t\u00e9\r\ninvit\u00e9 \u00e0 des congr\u00e8s gouvernementaux sur la veille technologique.\r\nSes rencontres avec des prospectivistes renomm\u00e9s l'ont conduit \u00e0\r\nreprendre des \u00e9tudes \u00e0 l'issue desquelles il a obtenu un master en\r\nveille technologique et innovation, en 2011 \u00e0 l'OCAD (Universit\u00e9 de\r\nl\u2019\u00c9cole d'art et de design de l'Ontario) de Toronto.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\r\nDepuis, il m\u00e8ne une double carri\u00e8re d'\u00e9crivain de science-fiction \r\net de prospectiviste. D\u00e8s 1993, il a remport\u00e9 le prix Aurora pour \r\nsa nouvelle <i>The Toy Mill<\/i>. Quand les colons se sont pos\u00e9s, les Vents ne savaient pas de\r\nquoi il s\u2019agissait. Incapables de leur parler ou d\u2019interagir avec\r\neux, ils les ont laiss\u00e9s tranquilles parce que les \u00eatres humains,\r\nen tant qu\u2019organismes, s\u2019int\u00e9graient \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cologie\r\nartificielle de Ventus.
