Cory Doctorow

BIOGRAPHIE

UNIVERS

- Little Brother (SF jeunesse)

- Marty Hench (SF/techno-thriller)

R.02 Eastern Standard Tribe (SF), Tor, mars 2004

Lien Internet (consulté en septembre 2019)

"A comedy of loyalty, betrayal, sex, madness, and music-swapping

Art is an up-and-coming interface designer, working on the management of data flow along the Massachusetts Turnpike. He's doing the best work of his career and can guarantee that the system will be, without a question, the most counterintuitive, user-hostile piece of software ever pushed forth onto the world.

Why? Because Art is an industrial saboteur. He may live in London and work for an EU telecommunications megacorp, but Art's real home is the Eastern Standard Tribe.

Instant wireless communication puts everyone in touch with everyone else, twenty-four hours a day. But one thing hasn't changed: the need for sleep. The world is slowly splintering into Tribes held together by a common time zone, less than family and more than nations. Art is working to humiliate the Greenwich Mean Tribe to the benefit of his own people. But in a world without boundaries, nothing can be taken for granted-not happiness, not money, and most certainly not love.

Which might explain why Art finds himself stranded on the roof of an insane asylum outside Boston, debating whether to push a pencil into his brain.... " (Présentation sur Goodreads)

"Alan is a middle-aged entrepreneur in contemporary Toronto, who has devoted himself to fixing up a house in a bohemian neighborhood. This naturally brings him in contact with the house full of students and layabouts next door, including a young woman who, in a moment of stress, reveals to him that she has wings--wings, moreover, which grow back after each attempt to cut them off.

Alan understands. He himself has a secret or two. His father is a mountain; his mother is a washing machine; and among his brothers are a set of Russian nesting dolls.

Now two of the three nesting dolls, Edward and Frederick, are on his doorstep--well on their way to starvation, because their innermost member, George, has vanished. It appears that yet another brother, Davey, who Alan and his other siblings killed years ago, may have returned...bent on revenge.

Under such circumstances it seems only reasonable for Alan to involve himself with a visionary scheme to blanket Toronto with free wireless Internet connectivity, a conspiracy spearheaded by a brilliant technopunk who builds miracles of hardware from parts scavenged from the city's dumpsters. But Alan's past won't leave him alone--and Davey is only one of the powers gunning for him and all his friends."

Perry and Lester invent things—seashell robots that make toast, Boogie Woogie Elmo dolls that drive cars. They also invent entirely new economic systems, like the “New Work,” a New Deal for the technological era. Barefoot bankers cross the nation, microinvesting in high-tech communal mini-startups like Perry and Lester’s. Together, they transform the country, and Andrea Fleeks, a journo-turned-blogger, is there to document it.Then it slides into collapse. The New Work bust puts the dot.combomb to shame. Perry and Lester build a network of interactive rides in abandoned Wal-Marts across the land. As their rides, which commemorate the New Work’s glory days, gain in popularity, a rogue Disney executive grows jealous, and convinces the police that Perry and Lester’s 3D printers are being used to run off AK-47s.” (présentation de l’éditeur)

"Welcome to the fractured future, at the dusk of the twenty-first century.

Earth has a population of roughly a billion hominids. For the most part, they are happy with their lot, living in a preserve at the bottom of a gravity well. Those who are unhappy have emigrated, joining one or another of the swarming densethinker clades that fog the inner solar system with a dust of molecular machinery so thick that it obscures the sun.

The splintery metaconsciousness of the solar-system has largely sworn off its pre-post-human cousins dirtside, but its minds sometimes wander...and when that happens, it casually spams Earth's networks with plans for cataclysmically disruptive technologies that emulsify whole industries, cultures, and spiritual systems. A sane species would ignore these get-evolved-quick schemes, but there's always someone who'll take a bite from the forbidden apple.

So until the overminds bore of stirring Earth's anthill, there's Tech Jury Service: random humans, selected arbitrarily, charged with assessing dozens of new inventions and ruling on whether to let them loose. Young Huw, a technophobic, misanthropic Welshman, has been selected for the latest jury, a task he does his best to perform despite an itchy technovirus, the apathy of the proletariat, and a couple of truly awful moments on bathroom floors."

The Rapture of the Nerds: Jury Duty and Appeals Court (2004).

"Trent McCauley is sixteen, brilliant, and obsessed with one thing: making movies on his computer by reassembling footage from popular films he downloads from the net. In near-future Britain, this is more illegal than ever. The punishment for being caught three times is to cut off your entire household from the internet for a year - no work, school, health or money benefits.

Trent thinks he is too clever for that to happen, but it does, and nearly destroys his family. Shamed and shattered, Trent runs away to London, where slowly he learns the ways of staying alive on the streets. He joins artists and activists fighting a new bill that will jail too many, especially minors, at one stroke. Jem introduces him to the Jammie Dodgers, beautiful brilliant "26" to love and cemetery parties.

Things look bad. Parliament is in power of a few wealthy media conglomerates. But the powers-that-be haven’t entirely reckoned with the power of a gripping movie to change people’s minds ..." (Présentation sur Goodreads)

R.09 Homeland (univers Little Brother), Tor Teen, février 2013

"In Cory Doctorow's wildly successful Little Brother, young Marcus Yallow was arbitrarily detained and brutalized by the government in the wake of a terrorist attack on San Francisco―an experience that led him to become a leader of the whole movement of technologically clued-in teenagers, fighting back against the tyrannical security state.

A few years later, California's economy collapses, but Marcus's hacktivist past lands him a job as webmaster for a crusading politician who promises reform. Soon his former nemesis Masha emerges from the political underground to gift him with a thumbdrive containing a Wikileaks-style cable-dump of hard evidence of corporate and governmental perfidy. It's incendiary stuff―and if Masha goes missing, Marcus is supposed to release it to the world. Then Marcus sees Masha being kidnapped by the same government agents who detained and tortured Marcus years earlier.

Marcus can leak the archive Masha gave him―but he can't admit to being the leaker, because that will cost his employer the election. He's surrounded by friends who remember what he did a few years ago and regard him as a hacker hero. He can't even attend a demonstration without being dragged onstage and handed a mike. He's not at all sure that just dumping the archive onto the Internet, before he's gone through its millions of words, is the right thing to do.

Meanwhile, people are beginning to shadow him, people who look like they're used to inflicting pain until they get the answers they want." (Présentation sur Goodreads)

R.10 Walkaway (SF), Tor, avril 2017

"Most days, Masha Maximow was sure she’d chosen the winning side. In her day job as a counterterrorism wizard for a transnational cybersecurity firm, she made the hacks that allowed repressive regimes to spy on dissidents, and manipulate their every move. The perks were fantastic, and the pay was obscene. When her targets were strangers in faraway police states, it was easy to compartmentalize, to ignore the collateral damage of murder, rape, and torture. But when it hits close to home, and the hacks and exploits she’s devised are directed at her friends and family–including boy wonder Marcus Yallow, her old crush and archrival, and his entourage of naïve idealists–Masha realizes she has to choose." R.12 Red Team Blues (série Martin Hench-01), Tor, avril 2023

R.13 The Lost Cause (SF), Tor, novembre 2023

"It’s thirty years from now. We’re making progress, mitigating climate change, slowly but surely. But what about all the angry old people who can’t let go?

For young Americans a generation from now, climate change isn't controversial. It's just an overwhelming fact of life. And so are the great efforts to contain and mitigate it. Entire cities are being moved inland from the rising seas. Vast clean-energy projects are springing up everywhere. Disaster relief, the mitigation of floods and superstorms, has become a skill for which tens of millions of people are trained every year. The effort is global. It employs everyone who wants to work. Even when national politics oscillates back to right-wing leaders, the momentum is too great; these vast programs cannot be stopped in their tracks.

But there are still those Americans, mostly elderly, who cling to their red baseball caps, their grievances, their huge vehicles, their anger. To their "alternative" news sources that reassure them that their resentment is right and pure and that "climate change" is just a giant scam.

And they're your grandfather, your uncle, your great-aunt. And they're not going anywhere. And they’re armed to the teeth.

The Lost Cause asks: What do we do about people who cling to the belief that their own children are the enemy? When, in fact, they're often the elders that we love?" (Présentation de l'éditeur)

R.14 The Bezzle (univers Martin Hench-02), Tor, annoncé pour février 2024

"The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant, a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money, and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island, where scenic, imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen, reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait, what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island, he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life.

Martin has made his most dangerous mistake trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them, money is a tool, a game, and a way to keep score, and they’ve found their newest mark―California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified, they are interested not in the lives they ruin, but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy.

A seething rebuke of the privatized prison system that delves deeply into the arcane and baroque financial chicanery involved in the 2008 financial crash, The Bezzle is a sizzling follow-up to Red Team Blues.

“[...] a reimagining of the world portrayed in Asimov's book of the same name. Detective Arturo Icaza de Arana-Goldberg is so busy keeping future streets safe from "men who masturbate into their hats under their tables and then put them back onto their shining pates" that he just doesn't have time to spy on his school-skipping twelve-year-old daughter, Ada. He tasks a robot to trail her instead, but when the robot is mysteriously disabled, Arturo finds himself drawn into an action-packed battle between, essentially, villanous supporters of digital rights management and heroic designers of open source software.” (auteur non cité, Tangent Online, février 2005)

2023 The Canadian Miracle (nouvelle, SF), Tor, novembre 2023

Lien Internet (consulté en novembre 2023)

"The narrator of “The Canadian Miracle” by Cory Doctorow is one of the Canadian workers who come to Mississippi to help locals deal with a devastating flood. The setting is a future time when Canada has dealt effectively with environmental disaster, but the United States has not. Inadvertently, her presence leads to controversy and a crisis.

This is a highly political story. The author makes his opinions very clear. Readers’ views will determine, to some extent, how they react to the piece. With that in mind, I found it to be a convincing portrait of a possible future. The author does not minimize the threat of climate change, but offers hope that future societies will be able to meet the challenge." (Victoria Silverwolf, Tangent Online, novembre 2023)

1994 Résumé (nouvelle, SF), On Spec, printemps 1994, février 1994

I owe credit to the excellent book, "Flappers, Bootleggers, Typhoid Mary and The Bomb," for this one. It's the story of a group of gullible sf fans in the mid-thirties who are conned into a goofy scheme to contact aliens from Alpha Centauri through overpriced fireworks displays. Gardner Dozois liked it well enough to give it mention in that year's "Year's Best Science-Fiction." Thanks, Gardner! “ (Cory Doctorow, d'après isfdb.org)

Super Man, or Hershie Abromowicz, is retired from his career helping the Canadian side of U. N. Peacekeeping operations. He has become somewhat radicalized, and participates in antiwar demonstrations, while still trying to prevent crime -- which of course includes crimes committed by the police. In this story he also deals with the kvetching of his widowed mother; with the Canadian bureaucracy as embodied by an eager young Minister, who gives him a hard time with the irregular arrangements in place concerning his pension; and with the changes in society and in his role due to the peaceful arrival of the aliens called ‘bugouts’.” (Rich Horton, Tangent Online, novembre 2001)

L’homme s’appelle Larry Roman.

But the network isn't perfect, and when a Downtime occurs, the entire system breaks down. People die. In response, Trish McCavity returns to Washington to head the effort to push a bill through Congress that would require the network to be interrogatable, or readable, by humans. She suspects that certain very powerful interests are manipulating the supposedly self-governing system to their own advantage. This puts her at odds with the man she almost loves, Rainer Feinstein, a network engineer who insists that it is scientifically impossible for the network to be corrupted. Before long, Rainer appears on the Hill as an advocate for Trish's opposition. [...]”

"[...] a cross between Ender’s Game and a financial seminar. David, Vijay, and Helene are three kids en route to Mars, where they will (hopefully) begin a new life. But their days are spent playing a game called Martian Chronicles, and in this game, they are considered quite important. So important, in fact, that they have accumulated vast quantities of wealth, which cannot be used in the real world, but in this milieu conceived by Doctorow, the game is reality. A version of MC is played on Mars as well, and it’s quite different than the one on Earth. So these young people have to figure out how to change their play style to fit the rough and tumble corporate fat-cat reality of the Red Planet. [...]" (Robert E. The 1st person speaker - probably Petard? the name never appeared in the story - is wicked smart and a modern Erin Brockovich for privileged students with few real problems in their life. As a high school freshman, he instigates an overthrow of the school’s lunchroom contract by securing food truck service to the students much to the financial consternation of the school board that was to receive a cut for the sub-par gruel. His antics earn him a scholarship to MIT where he fights the dorm association for the censorship of the internet, and then the evicting of potential rabble-rousers and whistle-blowers. But like a start-up birthed of a good idea not addressed by the marketplace behemoths but later bought out by them, the speaker is seduced by the wide scope of game-theory employed by his residence hall-managing nemesis“ ( http://jaffalogue.wordpress.com)

2021 Making Hay (SF), anthologie Make Shift: Dispatches from the Post-Pandemic Future, ed.
