Sarah Pinsker

BIOGRAPHIE

Sa première vente professionnelle est 20 Ways the Desert Could Kill You en 2012. Elle remporte le prix Sturgeon avec In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind (2013), également nominé pour le prix Nebula. Elle reçoit un prix Nébula en 2015 avec Our Lady of the Open Road, également finaliste du prix Sturgeon. Par la suite, d’autres titres seront également finalistes du prix Nebula : Une Greffe à Deux Voies (2014, son seul texte traduit en français, à ce jour) et Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea (2016). And Then There Were (N-One) (2017) est à la fois finaliste des prix Hugo, Sturgeon, Eugie, and Nebula tandis que The Court Magician (2018) est nominé pour les prix Hugo, Nebula et World Fantasy Awards. En 2020, c'est la victoire au Nebula dans la catégorie romans pour A Song for a New Day suivie d'une autre au Nebula 2021 pour Two Truths and a Lie dans la catégorie novelette. Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather remporte les prix Hugo, Nebula, Locus et Eugie Foster Memorial 2022 (nouvelle)

Une douzaine de ses récits sont rassemblés dans son recueil Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea : Stories (2019) qui remporte le prix Philip K. Dick en 2020 . L’année 2019 voit également la sortie de son premier roman, A Song for a New Day.

"It’s set in a near future where the government’s response to escalating violence is to tell people to stay home, and eventually to legislate that, to legislate crowds, instead of dealing with the weapons or those sowing chaos. It tells the stories of two women, one a musician who remembers what it was like before that legislation, and one who grew up in the new way of things, where VR technologies have improved to offer safe alternatives to school, concerts, ball games, et cetera, and most people have isolated themselves in the name of safety." "Everybody's getting one.

Val and Julie just want what's best for their kids, David and Sophie. So when teenage son David comes home one day asking for a Pilot, a new brain implant to help with school, they reluctantly agree. This is the future, after all.

Soon, Julie feels mounting pressure at work to get a Pilot to keep pace with her colleagues, leaving Val and Sophie part of the shrinking minority of people without the device.

Before long, the implications are clear, for the family and society: get a Pilot or get left behind. With government subsidies and no downside, why would anyone refuse? And how do you stop a technology once it's everywhere? Those are the questions Sophie and her anti-Pilot movement rise up to answer, even if it puts them up against the Pilot's powerful manufacturer and pits Sophie against the people she loves most."

2017 The Ones Who Know Where They Are Going (flash fiction, fantasy), Asimov’s, mars-avril 2017

[...] an effective story written in response to (or in dialogue with) Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas’. [The story] is told from the point of view of the abused child, who gets a chance to escape. The moral logic of the story is powerfully resolved and it presents a more wrenching choice than those who walk away make.” (Rich Horton, Locus, avril 2017)

"[...] This is told as a series of comments by a variety of people trying to understand the (fictional) traditional folk song ‘‘Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather’’. As we go through the comments on each verse of the extended version, in among the folk-nerdy discussion of variant versions, bad modern covers, and disputes about word choices, a story develops, involving attempts to track the origin of the song to a specific location in England, and also involving different possibilities about what the lyrics (which concern two lovers meeting, a stolen heart, and oak trees) really mean. One of the commenters seems to be following up on a previous writer’s trip to a potentially related village... though the previous writer has disappeared.
