BIOGRAPHIE
Carrie Vaughn est née le 28 janvier 1973 à Sacramento, Californie, États-Unis, dans une famille de militaires.
Après avoir transité par divers endroits du pays, sa famille s’établit dans le Colorado où elle termine ses études de lycée. Elle obtient un master en littérature anglaise à l’Université du Colorado, à Boulder.
Sa famille l’initie très tôt à la science-fiction. Podkayne, Fille de Mars de Robert Heinlein la marque particulièrement mais, déçue en le relisant des années plus tard, elle décide de rédiger sa version personnelle, Martians Abroad.
Elle fréquente l’atelier d’écriture Odyssey en 1998, avant d’y donner des cours en 2009. Son premier texte publié sort en 1999 dans Talebones ; c'est The Girl with the Pre-Raphaelite Hair. Dans les années qui suivent, son nom apparaît fréquemment au sommaire de ce magazine. Plus tard, elle devient une fidèle de Lightspeed dont elle assure également des rubriques. En 2001, sa nouvelle Doctor Kitty Solves All Your Love Problems lance la série des aventures de Kitty Norville, une lycanthrope animatrice à la radio. Le premier roman de la série, Kitty et les Ondes de Minuit, sort en 2005, suivi de treize romans et de nombreux récits plus courts, ce qui autorise Carrie Vaughn à se réclamer avec humour du titre de "werewolf psychologist".
Elle écrit dans de nombreux genres liés à l'imaginaire, fantasy, fantasy urbaine, steampunk, souvent dans des histoires destinées à un public jeune. Ses textes de science-fiction, comme la série Bannerless et des récits autonomes visent généralement un public plus adulte. Ses nouvelles Amaryllis et That Game We Played During the War sont finalistes du prix Hugo. Le roman Bannerless, quant à lui, remporte en 2018 le prix Philip K. Dick.
Carrie Vaughn vit actuellement dans le Colorado où elle peut s'adonner à une de ses passions : l'observation d'oiseaux.

Les récits se déroulent lors de l’époque victorienne. On a découvert, dans les débris d’un vaisseau spatial extraterrestre, la technologie éthérienne, ce qui a entraîné de considérables changements technologiques. Harry est le surnom qu'on a donné dans la famille royale à la princesse Maud de Galles, petite-fille de la reine Victoria, également connue en tant que lord Salisbury. Marlowe est un lieutenant de l'armée de Sa Majesté. Harry et Marlowe deviennent des aventuriers pour le compte de l'Empire, recherchant principalement d'autres technologies éthériennes. - Bannerless/Coast Road (SF/enquêtes policières)
La civilisation s’est effondrée à la suite d’une succession de désastres écologiques et de tragédies géopolitiques. Les survivants essaient de repartir à zéro,certains, comme dans la région de Coast Road où se déroulent les récits, en établissant des règles très strictes. Durabilité et gestion stricte des ressources sont des valeurs essentielles. La société est organisée en foyers et le contrôle des naissances va de pair avec une assistance mutuelle. La reconnaissance du droit à avoir un enfant est symbolisé par l'octroi d'une bannière. Au sein de cette communauté, Enid est chargée des enquêtes lorsqu'on soupçonne un délit au sein d'un foyer ou qu'une dénonciation est remontée au niveau supérieur. Les nouvelles Amaryllis (2010) et Astrophilia (2012) anticipent cet univers qui ne s’est vraiment développé qu’avec la nouvelle Bannerless et surtout le roman du même titre.
Sur son blog, Carrie Vaughn se demande si la meilleure description de cet univers ne serait pas : “Midsomer Murders [la série télévisée Inspecteur Barnaby] meets The Road [Cormac McCarthy, 2006).” Après tout , il s'agit bien de quelqu'un de sympathique menant des enquêtes au sein d'une petite communauté pleine de secrets cachés, sur fond de civilisation dévastée.

- Graff (SF)
À l'insu de tous, Graff est un androïde, membre d'un collectif qui valorise l'expérience individuelle. Il n'est pas le seul de son espèce, bien qu'ils ne soient pas nombreux. Leurs sytèmes endocriniens leur permettent d'enregistrer tous les instants et sensations de leurs vies parmi les humains et ils se transmettent ces enregistrements quand ils se rencontrent, ce qui est rare. Une simple poignée de mains suffit.
Graff a été intégré à l'équipage du Visigoth, un vaisseau chargé de lutter contre les pirates qui se livrent à la contrebande et autres activités illicites aux abords de Tre Ateyna, une station commerciale située à l'intérieur du territoire de la Guilde du commerce, qui joue quasiment le rôle de port d'attache pour le Visigoth. Le capitaine Ransom est l'ami de Graff depuis leur rencontre à l'académie et le Dr Ell, médecin de bord, est son amant.
Graff cache sa vraie nature à Ransom et Ell (nouvelle An Easy Job) mais sa récupération après un accident au cours duquel il manque perdre la vie révèle son secret (nouvelle Sinew and Steel and What They Told). Après avoir hésité, Ransom accepte de la garder à ses côtés tandis que l'équipage, bien qu'au courant, garde le secret. La novelette Time: Marked and Mended anonce une extension décisive de ce monde.
Jusqu’ici, cet univers n’est apparu que dans deux nouvelles et une novelette.

Un engin extraterrestre est observé à proximité de la terre, il est manifestement artificiel. L'humanité a maintenant la preuve non seulement d'une vie mais d'une intelligence extraterrestre. Pourtant ce qui devrait être le principal événement de l'histoire humaine donne naissance à ... rien. Au grand désespoir de la narratrice, scientifique au JPL, rien n'est entrepris du fait des difficultés scientifiques, diplomatiques, bureaucratiques. Conférences et reportages s'accumulent puis se réduisent au fur et à mesure que les mois puis les années passent mais aucun contact n'est tenté, d'autant que le vaisseau semble inhabité. Finalement, la seule décision qui résulte d'un consensus consiste à envoyer un vaisseau spatial dans la direction qui a été déterminée comme le point d'origine de l'engin extraterrestre en accusant réception du message et en attendant une réponse en retour. Graff a survécu à son accident mais est en piteux état. C’est une déception. Il espérait bien mourir dans son module reconnaissance, être volatilisé sans laisser aucune trace. C’est le destin habituel des éclaireurs. Il n’est que coupé en deux et le médecin de son vaisseau le Visigoth est excellent.
Il ne va pas mourir et c’est bien embarrassant. Depuis son processeur interne, il envoie un signal d'urgence au système de communication du vaisseau, afin que quelqu'un vienne fournir des explications.

Ce sera un boulot facile, annonce le capitaine Ransom. Graff et lui sont à bord du Visigoth, sur la station commerciale Tre Ateyna. Il suffira de localiser l'agent maritime, de l’identifier et de ramener l'info. Rien d'héroïque. Les données montrent que quelqu'un détourne la cargaison, reste à découvrir qui. Graff part ensuite se mêler à la foule des passagers à destination de la station Balliard.
Depuis leur première rencontre à l’Académie Graff ment par omission au capitaine Ransom,. Son peuple forme un collectif qui valorise l'expérience individuelle et qui envoie... des expérimentateurs. Ils sortent, vivent et sauvegardent tout, pas seulement les faits et les circonstances, grâce à leurs systèmes endocriniens. Le plus important, c’est ce qu’ils ressentent. Ils enregistrent et se transmettent ces données lors de leurs rencontres, rares car ils ne sont pas si nombreux. Si on les ouvre, autant de circuits que de sang s'écouleront. Ransom ne comprendrait pas. Il faut bien lui mentir.
Pau après son arrivée sur Balliard, l’alerte de proximité de Graff se déclenche soudain, signalant un autre système comme le sien. En balayant la foule du regard, il repère immédiatement celui qui lui ressemble. L'homme, plus jeune que lui, s’approche en souriant. Ils se serrent la main et leurs circuits se connectent. Ils apprennent tout l’un sur l’autre, noms, histoires, souvenirs ... Il s’appelle Perce et il est loin de chez lui depuis trois ans, travaille à des activités de bureau et… C'est l'agent maritime qui a fait passer des marchandises de contrebande par la station. Dans un salon de la station Tre Ateyna, Graff, accompagné du capitaine Ransom, attend l’arrivée de Tez afin de lui télécharger les souvenirs qu’il a acquis depuis leur dernière rencontre. Elle survient et ils se serrent la main. La connexion établie, les informations circulent, mais s’arrêtent brusquement. Au moment où Tez dit à son semblable qu’il est brisé, celui-ci s’effondre.
Tandis que Ransom explique aux personnes présentes qu’il s’agit d’un simple malaise, Graff, allongé sur le plancher, sent son processeur interne chauffer. Le diagnostic est formel et signale un trou d’un peu plus de trois heures dans sa mémoire. Le segment absent remonte à deux semaines. Graff était alors en mission sur Wellbien, où il traquait le commandant en second d'une organisation de contrebande. Il a attendu en vain pendant une heure dans un bar, avant d’en sortir. La tombée de la nuit était en contradiction avec l’indication de son chronomètre. Le bar s'appelait le Starshine. C'est là que se trouve le trou de mémoire. Ransom ordonne aussitôt à ses hommes de se mettre en quête de rapports de surveillance et de sécurité. Tez veut ramener Graff chez eux, seul endroit où on pourra peut-être le soigner. Sur l’insistance de Ransom, elle se résigne à enfreindre les règles et accepte qu’il les accompagne pour résoudre le mystère. (P.C.)

Lorsqu'elle a eu quinze ans, Dave lui a demandé pourquoi elle ne pouvait pas être une star de l'athlétisme comme son vieux père. La réponse a fusé : " Parce que lorsque Corlath m'emmènera à Damar, je devrai être prête." Quand ses parents ont dû avouer à Maggie qu’ils n’avaient pas les moyens de lui offrir un cheval, elle s’est contentée de sourire sagement, "Mon heure viendra".
À dix-sept ans, Maggie a disparu. Deux ans plus tard, tous, sauf ses parents, supposent qu'elle est morte. Sa mère est sûre qu’elle reverra Maggie. Mais jusqu’à quel point la jeune fille aura-t-elle changé ? (P.C.)

Cinq ans de sécheresse ont eu raison de la maisonnée de Greentree et de sa production de laine. Heureusement, Stella est une excellente tisseuse et sa mère Az lui trouve une place dans une maisonnée prospère dont elle connaît le chef, Toma.
C’est ainsi qu’au printemps, Stella parcourt trois cents miles sur la Longue Route pour atteindre Barnard Croft. L'accueil est en effet chaleureux et ses dons appréciés. Des prairies luxuriantes et de nombreux animaux fournissent un travail abondant. À l'écart des maisons, Stella remarque une petite cabane au sommet d'une colline et se demande à quoi elle peut servir.
Elle fait connaissance avec tous les membres de la communauté, en particulier Andi, une jeune femme de son âge avec qui elle partage une chambre et qui semble attirer les reproches de Toma. Un soir, elle voit Andi se diriger vers la baraque. (P.C.)

Le cessez-le-feu qui a suivi la guerre entre Gaant et Enith tient toujours. L'ancienne infirmière militaire enithi Calla Bellan en profite pour rendre visite au major Valk Larn, hospitalisé à la suite d'une blessure à l'abdomen.
Alors qu'il n'était que lieutenant, il a été son prisonnier et a assisté à une partie d'échecs entre elle et un infirmier enithi. Plus tard, c'est Calla qui est devenue sa prisonnière et Valk lui a demandé de lui apprendre les échecs. Télépathes, les Gaants ne connaissent pas les jeux qui exigent de la stratégie ou du bluff. Après avoir hésité – à quoi bon jouer contre un télépathe ? - elle a accepté et trouvé le moyen de rendre le jeu intéressant malgré son handicap.
Désorientée depuis la fin du conflit ouvert, elle a répondu à l’appel du major pour conclure la dernière partie qu’ils ont laissée inachevée. Mais l’enjeu se situe bien au-delà d’une simple victoire dans une partie d’échecs. (P.C.)

Tout en conduisant, Dennis demande à Kath où elle serait maintenant si … Sans doute à l’université, ou à une soirée en train de s’enivrer. Lui serait à Palm Springs, une Corona dans une main et un club de golf dans l’autre. Kath se demande ce qu’est devenu son frère Eddie qui se trouvait dans l’est du pays quand tout s’est effondré, quand l’électricité à disparu. Peut-être le reverra-t-elle un jour.
Le lendemain de leur arrivée à la clinique protégée de tous côtés par une barricade, une sentinelle signale l’approche d’un convoi et la cloche d’alarme retentit. Trois voitures, quelques motos, une douzaine de personnes au total. Ce genre de visite n’annonce généralement rien de bon. (P.C.)

De retour chez elle, après avoir acheté une bouteille de Vin Santo, elle porte la tasse à ses lèvres avec l’idée stupide de traverser les siècles. La lumière change, le sol s'ouvre et semble se transformer en une porte et...
Quand elle ouvre les yeux, elle se trouve dans une pièce en pierre qui sent le moisi. Un homme d'une trentaine d'années est allongé sur un lit de camp. Elle reconnaît des vêtements de l'Angleterre du 16ème siècle. Elle sait où elle est : la Tour de Londres. L’homme est Sir Thomas Wyatt, celui qui a écrit les premiers sonnets en anglais et a été emprisonné dans la Tour parce qu'il était soupçonné d'être un des amants d'Anne Boleyn. La légende veut qu'il ait assisté à son exécution depuis sa cellule. C'est de la folie, c'est tout simplement de la folie... (P.C.)

Polly Newton a toujours rêvé de devenir capitaine de vaisseau spatial. Lieutenante sur le Sunnyside Up, elle espère obtenir ce poste sur les premières missions interstellaires, d’ici une demi-douzaine d’années. Rares sont ceux qui savent qu’elle fait partie de la famille Newton, une des plus célèbres sur Mars. Son frère jumeau Charles, leader de la coalition politique des Guthries, a été le plus jeune élu au Conseil de gouvernance martien.
Polly surveille les moniteurs et les alarmes en compagnie de deux autres officiers quand on lui transmet un message personnel. Le Dr Patel lui apprend que Charles est sous traitement pour un problème cardiaque et lui demande de revenir sur Mars Colony One aussitôt que possible. Au message est jointe l’image d’un homme-poisson, dont elle est incapable de comprendre la signification.
Décidée à en savoir plus, Polly prend contact avec une très proche collaboratrice de son frère. Anda Guzman est catégorique : Charles n’est pas à l’hôpital où on annonce sa présence. Polly doit prendre une décision, le Sunnyside Up ne se trouve plus qu’à trois jours de la station Europe, la dernière possibilité pour Polly de quitter le vaisseau. (P.C.)

Enid apprend à lire à la petite Rose, quand un habitant accourt avec une nouvelle stupéfiante. Un étranger est arrivé à bord d’un… avion.
Elle sait ce qu’étaient les avions grâce à ses livres, mais personne à Haven n’en a jamais vus. L’engin a atterri dans un champ et un homme en descend. Il porte en bandoulière un objet dans lequel elle reconnaît un fusil, mais il ne fait pas mine de vouloir s’en servir. Son accent est si étrange qu’Enid met du temps à comprendre qu’il parle la même langue qu’elle. Il vient de New York et apporte une lettre rédigée il y a trente ans et destinée à Kathy Lane.
Enid va devoir lui annoncer que Tante Kath est morte. Puis elle va apprendre l’histoire de ce courrier. (P.C.)
La tante Kath, destinatrice de la lettre apportée par l’aviateur, était le personnage central de la novelette Where Would You Be Now ? (2018). Dans ce récit, elle s’interrogeait sur ce qu’était devenu son frère Eddie dont elle avait été séparée quand tout s’est effondré. Learning Letters apporte la réponse à cette question.
