- Jenny Casey / Worldwired (trilogie SF + nouvelles)

À partir du deuxième quart du vingt-et-unième siècle, le dérèglement climatique bouleverse la situation géo-politique. Les hivers sont brutaux et les étés torrides depuis l'arrêt du circuit thermohalin mondial, les eaux glaciales de l'Atlantique remontent le long des vallées fluviales et soumettent les digues à leur pressionj. La Nouvelle-Orléans flotte sur des barges et Houston a été abandonnée à la mer. Les États-Unis ont cessé d'être une super-puissance avec l'arrivée au pouvoir du Régime Fasciste Chrétien. Seul le Canada semble capable de faire face à une République Populaire Panchinoise d'autant plus agressive qu'elle se montre incapable de faire face à la famine qui règne dans le pays. Pour défendre les voisins de la Chine, le Canada intervient dans des guerres qui deviennent vite impopulaires, comme le conflit PanMalaisien, déclenché lors de la mise en service due l'ascenseur spatial malaisien. La montée des océans, les mauvaises récoltes, les tempêtes erratiques sont à l'origine du conflit sud-africain et de l'Action au Panama qui atteint le Brésil et l'Argentine.

Petit à petit, les conflits ouverts se transforment en une guerre froide. Les Canadiens sont les premiers à s'installer sur la Lune, puis sur Mars avant d'y retrouver leurs rivaux chinois. En 2062, la population continue de baisser, mais les émeutes de la faim et le régime fasciste chrétien sont largement dépassés.

En 2037, Jenny Casey a failli mourir brûlée vive. La partie gauche de son corps a été en grande partie détruite par un tir de missile anti-tank alors qu’elle conduisait un véhicule de transport de troupes canadiennes. Un traitement chirurgical révolutionnaire lui permet de survivre à un terrible prix : un œil gauche prothétique, un bras gauche en métal et des douleurs permanentes malgré les drogues. Elle termine néanmoins ses vingt ans de vie militaire et retourne au combat en tant que pilote d'évacuation sanitaire. Elle reçoit de multiples décoration, en reconnaissance des vies qu’elle a sauvées. Puis elle quitte le Canada et se crée une novelle vie dans le Connecticut.

En 2062, son passé la rattrape.

- Promethean Age (modern fantasy)

The Promethean Age est un univers où la Terre et les Fées, le Ciel et l'Enfer, sont des dimensions qui se chevauchent et s'entremêlent. La Terre est à peu près telle que nous la connaissons, sauf que dans les endroits que personne ne regarde habituellement de près, il y a des Mages, dont beaucoup sont membres du Club Prométhée, une organisation qui, depuis des siècles, mène une guerre contre le royaume des Fées pour le contrôle de la Terre. Mais les mages humains ou les fées de l'autre monde ne sont pas des blocs monolithiques, et des luttes de pouvoir opposent différentes factions dans les deux camps. Jacob's Ladder (c'est le nom du vaisseau génération, élément clé de la trilogie) associe un environnement d’avenir lointain proche de la fantasy - un vaisseau spatial naufragé en orbite autour d'une étoile mystérieuse - avec des explications relevant de la SF : l'équipage d'"anges" est en fait constitué d’avatars de l’IA du vaisseau, bien que l'action à l'intérieur du vaisseau lui-même ait tous les aspects de la fantasy. - White Space (SF)

Lors de ce que l’on a surnommé l'Eschaton, des vaisseaux générationnels ont entrepris un voyage sans retour dans une tentative désespérée de sauver une partie de l'humanité, parce que toute vie humaine sur la planète paraissait condamnée. Selon certains, un seul vaisseau s’en serait sorti, l'Échelle de Jacob.

Pendant ce temps, la Terre, contre toute attente, a survécu. Le bon sens a fini par l’emporter, renforcé par des interventions médicales qui ont évolué en ce qu’on a appelé le rightminding, une technologie conçue pour juguler les tendances auto-destructrices de l’humanité et rendre possible un niveau élémentaire d'altruisme et de civisme. Certains, largement minoritaires, se demandent toutefois où se situe la limite entre le "rightminding" et le lavage de cerveau. En tout état de cause, on a réduit la pression sur l'environnement terrestre et atténué le changement climatique à temps pour sauver la Terre et l'humanité. Plus tard, la découverte du moteur Alcubierre-White a permis de franchir des distances jusqu’alors inimaginables.

Les humains ont ainsi découvert le Synarche, une organisation galactique qui regroupent des milliers de races extraterrestres et y ont finalement adhéré. Le Synarche joue à la fois le rôle d’entente commerciale et d’organisme gouvernemental, et dispose d'une technologie sans égal. Il garantit à chacun une subsistance minimale, des soins et un revenu. Il s’appuie sur des données et des simulations gérées à la fois par des spécialistes de l'IA et par des représentants de toutes races.

Les humains bénéficient désormais d’augmentations. Dans leurs cerveaux sont implantés des fox qui leur permettent de réguler leurs émotions et dans lesquels ils peuvent télécharger des ayatanas, mémoires enregistrées par différentes personnes. Certains possèdent des mains avant (forehands) et des mains arrière (afthands), équipement plus adapté à un environnement à gravité faible ou nulle. Tous peuvent communiquer par senso, une sorte de télépathie plus efficace que la parole.

Edda of Burdens combine SF et fantasy : les séquences se déroulant dans le passé profond sont de la fantasy mythologique, tandis que les séquences se déroulant dans le futur lointain, dans un lieu désolé de la Terre mourante, sont de la science-fiction qui aboutit de manière ambiguë à une explication SF du destin du monde. - Boojumverse (SF, seulement dans 3 nouvelles/novelettes)

Dans l'avenir, l'humanité a établi des stations spatiales dans tout le système solaire en combinant technologies mécaniques et organiques. Les vaisseaux spatiaux en particulier se divisent en vaisseaux d'acier et boojums. créatures de l’espace profond, dont l’espèce a évolué dans les hautes enveloppes tempétueuses des géantes gazeuses où leur progéniture passe encore son enfance. Semblables à de gigantesques rascasses, elles possèdent des flancs tapissés de sacs à gaz remplis d'hydrogène. À partir de la lumière, elles génèrent de l’oxygène et, à partir de l’oxygène, de l’eau. Ce sont des écosystèmes à elles toutes seules. À bord des boojums, les pirates guettent leurs proies comme jadis les pirates dans leurs navires.

C’est un monde où pullulent des créatures issues d’autres univers. Les stations peuvent être envahies par les toves, qui ne présentent pas un gros problème malgré leur tendance à consommer l’oxygène, à boucher les conduits et à manger les animaux domestiques, les verchons, des prédateurs vicieux, mais surtout les bandersnatchs, si redoutés. Heureusement, les humains peuvent compter sur les mangoustes et les cheshires.

Les trois récits qui composent cet univers fourmillent de références à Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Dans le premier, Boojum, le vaisseau-boojum, Lavinia Whately, tire son nom d'un personnage de L'Horreur de Dunwich, la mère albinos de Wilbur Whateley, disparue une nuit d'Halloween. Mongoose se déroule sur la station de Kadath et les autres stations citées portent les noms de Providence, Leng et Dunwich. Enfin le titre du troisième récit, The Wreck of the 'Charles Dexter Ward', est un hommage à une des œuvres les plus connues de Lovecraft. L'Affaire Charles Dexter Ward.

- Sub-Inspector Ferron (SF)

Les récits se déroulent à Bangalore, au sud de l'Inde, dans les années 2070.

Le dérèglement climatique a transformé la planète, surtout depuis 2042, début des "Bad Years". Le Shift a modifié le cours des moussons, les voyages lointains se sont raréfiés et on évite les dépenses d’énergie superflues, par exemple en utilisant des bus à pédales. Les Salariés sont devenus une catégorie privilégiée au sein d’une société aux emplois instables. Toutefois, les réseaux ont poursuivi leur développement et la réalité virtuelle est devenue une banalité tandis que l’ingénierie génétique a accru l’intelligence de certains animaux au point de les doter de la parole. Dansl’ensemble, c’est une époque où on espère le retour à lastabilité et à une gestion prudente de la santé et du bien-être de la planète et de la race humaine.

Le premier récit situé dans cet univers, In the House of Aryaman, a Lonely Signal Burns, coïncide avec la découverte qu’une étoile située à quelque vingt mille années-lumière de là, dans la galaxie d'Andromède. Elle a soudainement commencé à présenter un scintillement que certains astronomes considèrent comme le signe précurseur d'une nova alors que d'autres estiment qu'il pourrait s'agir de signaux d'une civilisation disparue depuis longtemps, dont le message a été retardé en raison de l'énorme distance.

Ferron, qui a abandonné son nom de naissance de Tamanna, est sous-inspectrice de police, après avoir suivi des études classiques. Elle vit dans une demeure qui abrite toute sa famille, sa mère, ses trois sœurs mariées, ses tantes, ses cousins et cousines. Elle a de fréquents accrochages avec sa mère Madhuvanthi qui souffre d’une telle addiction au monde virtuel depuis la mort de son mari que Ferron peine à payer les services nécessaires à l’hébergement de fichiers dont la taille se mesure en yottaoctets. Dans son activité professionnelle, Ferron est secondée par le Sr Constable Indrapramit qui cache une grave blessure psychologique. Il a dû intervenir en utilisant une arme létale pour mettre fin à un meurtre de masse.

R.01 Hammered(univers Jenny Casey/Worldwired-01), Bantam Spectra, janvier 2005

À cinquante ans, moralement fatiguée et victime d’une douleur permanente, Jenny Casey essaie d’oublier son passé dans le Connecticut mais, en 2062, celui-ci la rattrape. Son ami, le chef de gang Razorface, lui amène un de ses adolescents victime d’une overdose à une drogue surnommée le Marteau, fabriquée par Unitek. Elle sait de quoi il s’agit. On lui administrait du Marteau lorsqu’il lui fallait affronter les douleurs causées par le traitement chirurgical qui lui a donné un œil prosthétique et un bras gauche en métal.

Aidée par ses amis, Razorback, le policier Mitch et Gabe Chastaign qui lui a jadis sauvé la vie, Jenny Casey va retrouver sur son chemin sa sœur Barbara avec qui elle a rompu il y a des années et qui est devenue depuis une ronin, et surtout le colonel Frederick Valens, le responsable de sa transformation physique qui travaille pour Unitek. Comme d’habitude, les visées de Valens sont impénétrables, d’autant qu’il a acquis les services du Dr Elspeth Dunsany, une spécialiste de l’intelligence artificielle qu’il a fait emprisonner et qu’il fait maintenant libérer. La course à l'espace est lancée. Tout en dialoguant avec Richard Feynman, l’IA cachée dans son cerveau, Casey, dont le corps a été amélioré à partir de nanomachines et qui a réintégré les forces armées canadiennes, s’entraîne à piloter le vaisseau spatial Montréal. Elle se retrouve ainsi à nouveau sous les ordres de l’homme qu’elle déteste, le colonel Valens.

À Toronto, le conseiller scientifique de la première-ministre Constance Riel, lui montre des photos prises par satellite d’algues qui, comme les récifs de corail avant elles, sont en train de mourir. Ce phénomène pourrait diminuer tragiquement la capacité de la planète à abriter la vie d'ici un siècle ou deux. Il pourrait aussi expliquer l’intérêt soudain des Chinois pour l’exploration spatiale. Leur vaisseau spatial, le Huang Di, utilise, tout comme le Montréal, une technologie développée à partir des épaves de vaisseaux extraterrestres trouvés sur Mars, que personne ne maîtrise.

De son côté, le chef de gang Razorface, ami de Jenny Casey, veut venger les morts de Mitch, Bobby et de ses hommes. Sa seule piste : une nouvelle fois Unitek, la société assez puissante pour contester l’autorité de Riel et pour laquelle seuls ses intérêts comptent.

Malheureusement, la course à l'espace pourrait bien vite se transformer en course à la guerre.(P.C.)

R.03 Worldwired (univers Jenny Casey/Worldwired-03), Bantam Spectra, décembre 2005

L'équipage du vaisseau spatial Montréal a été renforcé par un xénosémioticien australien et un ethnolinguiste anglais pour essayer de communiquer avec les deux vaisseaux extraterrestres, surnommés respectivement l’arbre-vaisseau et la cage-aux-oiseaux. Casey insiste sur la nécessité d’aller à bord des vaisseaux.

Sur Terre, la crise diplomatique menace à tout instant de dégénérer en guerre totale entre le Canada et la Chine. Le Canada accuse le régime panchinois d’être à l’origine de la destruction de Toronto par un astéroïde et de la catastrophe écologique qui a suivi tandis que les autorités panchinoises reprochent au Canada d’avoir déclenché une contamination de l’océan par des nanomachnes tirées de la technologie extraterrestre. Dans chaque camp, les factions s’agitent et la toute puissante société Unitek est loin d’être inactive. Une réunion plénière de l’ONU devant laquelle sont convoqués Casey et d’autres témoins de la catastrophe s’annonce décisive.

Pendant ce temps, l’IA Richard, qui permet à Casey et à ses proches augmentés par les nanomachines de communiquer avec elle et entre eux instantanément par un worldwire, essaie de faire face à la menace de destruction de toute vie sur terre à la suite des dérèglements climatiques. (P.C.)

Alors qu’ils se rendent aux coordonnées indiquées par un informateur, ils découvrent un Ativahika, apparemment mort. De toutes les anciennes races systers (extraterrestres), les Ativahikas comptent parmi les plus mystérieuses.

Quand Singer repart à la recherche de leur objectif, il évite de justesse une collision avec un autre vaisseau qui disparaît aussitôt. Il parvient enfin à l’épave recherchée et Haimey décide d’aller voir de plus près. Elle constate, à sa stupéfaction, la présence de gravité artificielle. Aucun doute : il s’agit de technologie koregoi. Poursuivant sa progression, elle découvre qu’une bonne partie du gigantesque vaisseau a été détruite par une explosion qui a provoqué une décompression.

Elle comprend qu’elle se trouve sur une scène de crime et tout s’éclaircit : il s’agit d’un navire-usine. On a tué l'Ativahika pour en tirer le devashare, une drogue source d’immenses profits. Au cours de son exploration, elle est victime d’un piège et sa combinaison est percée. De retour sur Singer, une sorte de toile d’araignée brille sous l’épiderme de son bras droit. De la senso koregoi. C’est alors que vaisseau mystérieux réapparaît, et tire sur Singer.

Ce n’est que le début d’une aventure qui va mener Singer jusqu’au cœur de la Galaxie et au cours de laquelle les pouvoirs nouvellement acquis par Haimey vont se révéler décisifs pour affronter une adversaire aussi redoutable qu’attirante. (P.C.)

Celui-ci a cessé toute communication, comme d’ailleurs le vaisseau qui a relayé son appel, le I Bring Tidings From Afar, resté à proximité.

Le Big Rock Candy Mountain est un gigantesque vaisseau génération parti de la Terre à l’époque de l’Eschaton, alors que la situation paraissait désespérée et avant que les choses s’arrangent. Le capitaine est mort, des milliers de passagers sont endormis dans des cellules cryos et la seule « personne » consciente à bord est une créature semblable à une bulle de mercure dorée qui peut prendre une forme humanoïde féminine et qui se donne le nom d’Helen Alloy.

À bord du I Bring Tidings From Afar, Llyn fait une découverte tout aussi étonnante : un engin mécanique capable d’héberger des humains, et doté de puissantes pattes hérissées de piquants.

Llyn et ses coéquipiers rentrent à la station hôpital inter-espèces Core General avec leurs découvertes, et c’est alors que la situation se dégrade. Les IA semblent victimes d’un sabotage qui met tout le personnel et les patients en péril. (P.C.)

On retrouve dans ce roman deux personnages d’Ancestral Night : l’officier de police à apparence de mante religieuse Cheeirilaq et, dans un rôle bref mais décisif, le vaisseau-IA Singer.

Dans une interview à Jonathan Thornton, Elizabeth Bear confie que le décor du récit a été inspiré par la série L'Hôpital des étoiles de James White.

À l’aide de son chapeau, Doc Holliday abrite ses yeux du soleil de novembre en s’exclamant : « On dirait un truc tiré de Jules Verne ! » La masse qui se profile pourrait être la coque rouillée et orangée de n'importe quelle épave abandonnée, si elle ne se trouvait à des centaines de kilomètres de l’océan et si elle n’était pas des centaines de fois trop grosse pour être un vaisseau. Derrière lui, quatre femmes et un homme se taisent. Une longue éraflure sillonne le désert derrière la coque. L’impact - ou tout simplement le désert - a creusé plusieurs trous dans ses flancs, révélant des ponts déformés, des tuyaux et des câbles pendants, des éléments de structure étirés et tordus. Doc n’était pas très chaud à l’idée de conduire quatre femmes dans le désert, mais c’était lui ou John Ringo qui n’aurait eu aucun scrupule à les dépouiller de leurs chevaux et de leur argent. Il sort de sa poche une barre de marrube blanc dont il arrache un morceau pour le sucer. La dernière chose dont il a besoin maintenant est une foutue quinte de toux.

Doc Holliday n’est pas au bout de ses surprises, que ce soit sur la nature de l’épave, son contenu et l’identité de ses compagnons. (P.C.)

Dans le métro moscovite, Petra Ivanovna écoute à peine son petit ami Ilya, l’essentiel de son attention se concentre sur le chien installé sur le seul siège disponible. Puis elle reprend le fil de la conversation d'Ilya. Comme toujours, il s’agit d’un plan pour devenir riche rapidement. Celui-ci consiste à être payé pour incuber le foie de quelqu'un d'autre. Dans ses tripes. A côté de son propre foie, sans doute ? Elle l’imagine en train de gonfler, comme une femme enceinte et se demande si ses chevilles vont enfler. C’est comme faire pousser un bébé, ajoute-t-il. Ils ne peuvent se permettre d'avoir un bébé. Ni l'argent ni le temps, jusqu'à ce qu’elle termine son diplôme. Tandis qu’Ilya rattrape sa guitare électrique dont la courroie glisse de son épaule, elle commence à expliquer les différences avant de renoncer quand elle comprend qu’il ne pensait pas à lui, mais à elle pour faire pousser l’organe. Il ne peut pas grossir alors qu’il doit monter sur scène. Comme si une serveuse de cocktails grassouillette avait des chances de toucher de gros pourboires. Le chien gémit et elle s’excuse de ne rien avoir à lui donner puis elle descend du métro en se demandant ce qu’elle fait de sa vie.

Elle ignore encore que c’est précisément toute sa vie qui va changer à la suite de cette rencontre avec ce chien qui est en fait une chienne. (P.C.)

Malgré la crises des énergies qui a, en particulier, limité les déplacements et le dérèglement climatique qui a bouleversé le cycle des moussons, Bangalore en Inde, a réussi sa mutation, passant du tourisme médical à la biotech.

Ferron, la sous-inspectrice de la brigade criminelle de Bangalore, est appelée sur une scène de crime. Avec l’agent Indrapramit, elle examine les restes sanglants de Dexter Coffin, un physicien de renom que la société BioShell a fait venir d’Amérique, malgré le coût carbone. Il semble avoir été retourné de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur, comme une énorme saucisse éclatée. Dans un coin, une table est dressée pour deux tandis qu’une autre partie de la pièce est occupée par des équipements techniques. Farron découvre l’animal de compagnie de l’Américain, un chat-perroquet de la dernière génération, qu’elle décide de prendre en charge en le surnommant Président Miaou. Résultat d’une bio-ingénierie, l’animal ne parle cependant pas et Indrapramit constate que la mémoire de ce seul témoin a été effacée. Alertée parce que Coffin n’était pas en télétravail et ne répondait pas aux appels, la police a dû enfoncer la porte verrouillée en mode alarme.

Pendant ce temps, les flux d’information parlent d’une étoile située dans la galaxie d’Andromède et de ses signaux périodiques que certains astronomes considèrent comme le signe avant-coureur d’une nova. Farron se souvient qu’Andromède et Pégase font partie de l’Uttara Bhadrapada, la vingt-sixième maison lunaire de l’astronomie indienne, sous l’influence du dieu Arayaman qui parcourt la Voie lactée, les Ganges célestes. Ses pensées sont également occupées par sa mère qui dépense une fortune en existence virtuelle et en archivage. Depuis dix-huit mois, Farron règle les factures par dévotion filiale mais elle arrive au bout de ses possibilités. (P.C.)

Il fait froid dans cette pièce qui n’est pas réelle. La chambre est petite et octogonale, les murs sont de pierre jaune. On n'a pas dit à Marie Katz à quoi s'attendre, si ce n'est que la simulation l'aiderait à pratiquer l'empathie dont on lui reproche l’absence dans son comportement envers ses collègues. Elle a signé de nombreuses dérogations avant qu'on l'aide à revêtir la combinaison, à mettre le masque et les gants, à enfiler les aiguilles dans ses veines et à monter dans le réservoir. Bien que sceptique sur l’efficacité du traitement, elle aurait signé n’importe quoi pour conserver son travail de conceptrice d’interface utilisateur dans une société de jeux. Il lui reste quelques séances, au moins, avant l’évaluation de ses progrès.

Quand elle ressent la présence d’êtres fantomatiques, il lui faut trouver la raison de leur présence en ces lieux et le moyen de les libérer. C’est le prix à payer pour sortir de cette réalité virtuelle. (P.C.)

Cette novelette est le résultat d’une expérience collaborative menée par le Center for Science and the Imagination à l’Université de l’État d’Arizona, dans le cadre du projet Crowd Futures. Une première série de discussions a permis de définir le thème du récit : une histoire portant sur l'application des technologies de réalité virtuelle pour le bien social, avec une touche gothique. Elizabeth a ensuite rédigé un premier jet incomplet et le choix de la conclusion a été soumis à un vote sur Internet.

Les Locataires ont été découverts par hasard, avant la naissance de Marq, lors de fouilles sur des sites fréquentés jadis par des Homo neanderthalensis. La fonte d’un glacier y avait mis à jour des cadavres. Peu après, les paléoanthropologues développèrent des formes contagieuses de cancer mais le plus étrange survint quand les chercheurs affirmèrent discuter avec leurs tumeurs. Tout ceci aurait pu passer pour du délire sauf que le cancer a également guéri le diabète d'un paléobotaniste, et que soudain, tous semblaient avoir de brillantes idées sur la façon dont cette culture Néandertalienne précise fonctionnait.

Dans cette société post-genre, les Locataires apportent de réels avantages à leurs Hôtes, en particulier les personnes âgées, les malades en phase terminale ou chroniques, à condition qu’ils se portent volontaires. Ils prolongent leur durée de vie et apaisent leurs douleurs. En échange, les Hôtes offrent un espace de vie, de la nourriture et l'utilisation de leur corps pendant leur sommeil.

Dès la signature du contrat qui les liait, Marq, mathématicien·ne universitaire, a su que son temps avec Tamar, porteuse du Locataire Atticus, était limité, mais c’était mieux que rien. L’amour vaut mieux que la solitude. Malgré tout, quand l’heure est arrivée, c’est dur à accepter. Alors que Tamar supporte de plus en plus mal de voir Marq assister à son agonie, celui·celle-ci doit faire face à des choix dramatiques à ce tournant de son existence. (P.C.)

Celle qui se fait appeler Greer Griswold est âgée de cinquante-deux ans et travaille comme physicienne dans une université américaine. Privée de ses parents adoptifs décédés, célibataire sans enfants, elle décide sur une impulsion d’utiliser un kit ADN. Les résultats sont surprenants. Plus de dix pour cent de l’échantillon n’ont pu être identifiés. Elle transmet ces mesures à son collègue généticien, Michael Roberts, Il se souvient d’un doctorant dont les travaux sur des variantes non cartographiées dans le projet du génome humain ont été rejetés à cause de données jugées impossibles. Roberts retrouve le projet de thèse qu’il juge assez intéressant pour que lui et Greer se rendent en Nouvelle Angleterre où vit son auteur, Albert Gilman.

Celui-ci, en guise d’accueil, leur demande de partir. Greer lui explique alors que ses résultats à un test génétique sont semblables à ceux qu’il a étudiés. Il répond qu’il en est désolé avant de préciser que son étude portait sur son propre cas et il les invite une nouvelle fois à retourner chez eux.

Quelque temps plus tard, Greer reçoit un colis postal envoyé par Gilman. Elle y découvre une carte accompagnée de notes lui souhaitant bonne chance et annonçant la mort prochaine de son expéditeur. Elle retourne aussitôt au cottage dont elle trouve la porte ouverte et qui est complètement vide. Avant de repartir, elle voit un vieil ordinateur et copie tous les fichiers.

De retour chez elle, Roberts et elle regardent les fichiers, des selfies qui montrent Gilman se transformer en quelque chose proche des batraciens.

Sur la carte, ils remarquent un endroit coché au crayon, près de Martha’s Vineyard. Ils décident aussitôt de s’y rendre. Ils garent leur voiture dans la réserve naturelle et, de là, partent, sac au dos et carte à la main. C’est le début d’un voyage qui les mènera bien plus loin qu’ils ne le pensent. (P.C.)

Calcédoine est la dernière des machines de guerre : une larme à trois pattes de la taille d’un gros char d’assaut, deux grappins et un manipulateur délicat repliés sous la tourelle couronnant son bout pointu, une armure en polycéramique étoilée. Elle est la dernière de sa section, ses divers éléments ont été gravement endommagés par la fournaise à laquelle elle a échappé et ses batteries sont en voie d'épuisement.

Le long de la ligne de marée, elle boîte et se traîne, tout en ramassant des perles de naufrage pour en faire des colliers. C'est ce qu'elle explique à celui qui est venu à sa rencontre, maigre et dépenaillé, de petite taille pour un humain. Sans doute un jeune.

Cette rencontre va tout changer pour l'un comme pour l'autre. (P.C.)

Le vaisseau a été baptisé Lavinia Whateley par son équipage humain. C’est une Boojum, et dans les entrailles de la section d'ingénierie, Black Alice Bradley, qui n’est qu'un simple être humain, aime ce vaisseau qu’elle surnomme Vinnie.

Black Alice a prêté serment en ‘32, après les Émeutes Vénusiennes et a été affectée à l’ingénierie. Elle est de service quand Lavinia Whateley repère une proie, un cargo, gros, disgracieux et désespérément surclassé, de quoi nourrir et satisfaire Vinnie . La capitaine Song mobilise ses troupes contre le Josephine Baker, un vaisseau de métal, pas une Boojum. Il n'y a aucun moyen de juger de la progression de la bataille depuis l'Ingénierie, mais, après cinquante minutes, le Josephine Baker se rend.

Chargée de repérer tout ce qui peut être utile soit à Vinnie, soit à l’équipage, Black Alice va faire une découverte susceptible d’assurer soit la fortune, soit la perte de l’équipage. La suite des événements va l’amener à remettre en cause tout ce qu’elle croit savoir des Boojums. (P.C.)

En 1938, Paul Harding, un professeur d'université noir, se rend dans un village côtier du Maine pour étudier une race d’animaux considérés comme des fossiles vivants, Oracupoda horibilis, les shoggoths des vagues communs. Avec leurs cinq ou six mètres de diamètre et leurs huit tonnes à maturité, ils constituent les plus gros exemplaires de leur espèce. Dépourvus de système nerveux comme de réseaux neuraux, ils ont une autre propriété étonnante : pour autant qu’on sache, personne n’a jamais vu de shoggoth mort, ce qui a conduit certains à parler d'immortalité.

Descendant d'un Buffalo Soldier, autrement dit un soldat noir, et ancien combattant de la Première Guerre Mondiale, Harding vit très mal des manifestations locales de racisme ainsi que les nouvelles venues d’Europe, en particulier l’annonce de la Nuit de Cristal dans l'Allemagne nazie.

Une découverte essentielle concernant les shoggoths va lui ouvrir des perspectives qui pourraient bien se révéler décisives. (P.C.)

Izrael Irizarry débarque sur la station Kadath. Sur son épaule, Mongoose [= Mangouste] tend le cou, sort la langue pour goûter l'air et colorie une question. Quelques pas plus loin, Irizarry est assailli par une odeur, celle que Mongoose a sentie, la puanteur aiguë des toves. Il tapote le tentacule enroulé autour de sa gorge pour la calmer. Mongoose ne peut entendre Irizarry, une créature adaptée au vide n’a pas d’oreilles. Mais elle peut sentir sa voix vibrer dans sa gorge, et une vrille lui frôle les lèvres, sentant le souffle de l'air et la forme du mot. Ses quatre yeux composés et ses douze yeux simples scintillent et sa couleur s'adoucit. Elle est impatiente de chasser et il ne l'en blâme pas.

La cheffe de la station a fait appel à lui pour venir à bout d’une « infection mineure ». Irizarry comprend vite qu'elle est loin du compte. Toves et verchons se développent comme une épidémie, à partir d'un point d'origine unique, le Patient Zéro étant dans ce cas la déchirure dans l'espace-temps que le premier tove a traversée. Mais, surtout, ce que les toves ont déchiré et les verchons ont élargi est un accès pour le plus dangereux prédateur de cette chaîne alimentaire extraterrestre, le bandersnatch.

Irizarry et Mongoose vont avoir du pain sur la planche. (P.C.)

La pièce est blanche et immaculée, à une exception près. Le cadavre du milliardaire Clive Steele est étendu aux pieds de Dolly, ses viscères épanouis comme des pétales macabres. Dolly est verrouillée dans la position où elle se trouvait quand son programme s’est arrêté. Roz Kirkbride et Peter King sont chargés de l’enquête. Dolly, l’androïde sexuel dont la mémoire est effacée, est-elle l’arme du crime ou la meurtrière ?

Même si Dolly est un prototype, elle est très différente des robots d’Asimov. Elle n’a même pas la neurochimie pleine de nuances d’un chat, elle n’a pas de désirs et ne porte aucun jugement de valeur. Les androïdes n’ont pas d’identité, ce ne sont que des objets même si des gens s’y attachent comme à leur voiture.

Mais alors, pourquoi Dolly aime-t-elle écouter des improvisations de jazz quand elle passe l’aspirateur ? (P.C.)

Cynthia Feuerwerker est à la recherche de n’importe quel emploi depuis que des accusations de faute professionnelle l’empêchent de pratiquer son métier de médecin. Le professeur Wandrei, un vieil Arkhamer chauve, lui propose de remplacer le médecin décédé du Jarmulowicz Astronomica, qui doit partir pour une mission de récupération concernant un vaisseau-ambulance, le Charles Dexter Ward, un navire vivant, une Boojum. Elle donne finalement son accord. Elle administre des premiers soins à bord du Jarmulowicz Astronomica, constatant sans surprise qu’elle est la seule non-arkhamer. Elle se lie d’amitié avec Hester, une astrobiologiste qui lui dit qu’aucun dossier ne mentionne une boojum qui aurait péri.

La découverte sur le Charles Dexter Ward d’un cadavre ambulant avec un trou là où se trouvait son estomac puis celle d’une doctoresse lancée dans d’épouvantables recherches vont convaincre Cynthia que Wandrei dissimule de sombres arrière-pensées. (P.C.)

Lors de sa rencontre avec la juge, il imaginait ses mains autour de son cou et le craquement de son os hyoïde, mais il l’a écoutée. La cour était consciente que ses crimes étaient le résultat de dommages neuraux, y compris une amygdale cérébrale qui fonctionnait mal. Une technologie qui avait dépassé le stade expérimental pouvait réparer ces dommages. Elle a détaillé les conditions de l’opération qui conduirait à ce qu’elle préférait appeler une réparation de son esprit plutôt que son contrôle avant de lui demander son accord. Persuadé qu’il restait le chasseur, il a accepté.

Maintenant, sa course dans la neige est interrompue et son nouveau moi va connaître l’angoisse du passage de chasseur à proie. (P.C.)

Les quelque trente mille humains ont opté pour Aphrodite, plus étendue, plus calme, plus sûre, où l'on a trouvé des ruines d'une ancienne culture intelligente.

Dharthi et Kraken sont amantes mais la situation est déséquilibrée. Kraken réussit tout ce qu’elle entreprend, elle collectionne les titres universitaires, obtient sans difficulté les subventions dont elle a besoin pour ses études et tout le monde l’admire. Dharthi est décidée à faire ses preuves, quitte à mourir en essayant. Elle traversera seule la jungle d’Ishtar, le continent à l’activité volcanique encore active, sans soutien autre que son adaptshell, une combinaison quasi biologique d’une extrême résistance, pour prouver sa théorie sur les modes de peuplement aborigènes cythéréens. Le capitaine John Steel achète à un trafiquant d’armes une machine de guerre dotée de tourelles de 36DD, d’une coque de 26 pouces en alliage de titane avec un placage carbone-céramique et d’un échappement à double canon. Ses lignes le rendent muet d’admiration.

Steel est un mercenaire. Il doit être facile à trouver pour ses clients et impossible à trouver pour ses ennemis. La peur lui permet de gagner sa vie car les les gens effrayés font des guerres alors que ceux qui se sentent forts font la paix et signent des traités. Il n’est qu’un type qui fait son boulot. Un sale boulot, certes, mais de toute façon quelqu’un doit le faire, ça paie bien et il est doué pour ça. Sans compter que, maintenant, il a le parfait engin, surtout après avoir retiré les verrouillages de sécurité et circuits de moralité.

Au fil des missions douteuses, une question émergera : qui manifeste le plus d’humanité, l’homme ou la machine ? (P.C.)

Pour tous ceux qui le connaissent, Brian Kaufman est un milliardaire excentrique. Lui-même considère qu’il n’est qu’un homme qui aime la solitude et qui a fait construire une maison intelligente et fortifiée pour protéger sa vie privée, son travail et sa personne. Il ne se prépare pas à une hypothétique apocalypse, c’est juste un homme sensé, peu doué pour les rapports humains.

Tout se complique le jour où Glory, l’IA de la maison, lui annonce qu’elle a initialisé le protocole de quarantaine, conformément à la directive soixante-douze, paragraphe c, qui précise les conditions d’application des mesures de sécurité en cas de maladie, d'accident, d'acte de terrorisme ou de toute autre catastrophe. Puis elle porte à sa connaissance un message prioritaire qui l’informe qu’il est détenu contre une rançon. Des pirates ont pris le contrôle total de sa maison et de tous ses systèmes. Ils lui en rendront a maîtrise dès réception de l'équivalent de 150.000.000,00 dollars en bitcoins. Brian constate aussitôt qu’ils disent vrai. Il peut envoyer des requêtes HTTP, mais pas SMTP, il reçoit des méls mais ne peut en envoyer. Impossible de faire démarrer ses véhicules à cause de l’électronique embarquée, ni de casser les vitres blindées. L’IA elle-même est à l’abri dans un local fortifié.

Brian va alors découvrir que le problème avec les endroits où il est difficile d'entrer, c'est qu'il est aussi très difficile d'en sortir. (P.C.)

Sur le parking du Louxor, Isabella se dit qu'elle est maintenant le dernier être humain encore en vie sur Terre. Certes, elle n’en a aucune certitude, peut-être Las Vegas est-il le seul endroit à avoir été anéanti, mais elle en doute. Elle en profite pour faire le point sur ce qui a disparu, sur ce qu’elle regrettera et sur ce qui ne lui manquera pas.

Elle s’est installée à Vegas après avoir changé de nom et abandonné sa carrière. Elle est devenue croupière pour se cacher de Paul. Au moins, maintenant, elle sait que si quelqu’un la pousse à regarder par-dessus son épaule, ce ne sera pas lui.

Dans une voiture de police, elle trouve un revolver dont le barillet est garni de six balles. Elle récupère aussi un vélo tout terrain avec une petite remorque.

Finalement, il y a au moins un autre être humain et il la suit depuis qu’il l’a repérée dans un supermarché Vons. Elle se rue vers la sortie et court vers sa bicyclette sans voir personne. Elle s’éloigne malgré les cris qui lui demandent de ne pas partir et affirment ne lui vouloir aucun mal. Une partie d’elle-même réclame la fin de sa solitude. Reste à savoir si elle est plus forte que celle qui la pousse à fuir. (P.C.)

2020 A Blessing of Unicorns (novella, univers Sub-Inspector Ferron), Audible (version audio), octobre 2020

La sous-inspectrice de police Ferron lève sa sandale du sol en étouffant un juron. Autour de son pied s'agglutinent une douzaine de licornes synthétiques bio-imprimées, de la taille d'un chat. Le bord tranchant d'un petit sabot lui a entaillé un orteil. Un étalon de couleur caramel dépose une crotte de la taille d'une bille pour faire savoir à tout le monde qu'il est le patron. L’agent Indrapramit tend à Ferron une boîte de coagulant tandis qu’elle se demande si les crottes fertilisent le tapis.

Tous deux enquêtent sur la disparition de l'occupante des lieux, une jeune célébrité des médias sociaux appelée Beli Handi. Ses comptes virtuels et médiatiques, sa source de revenus, sont silencieux depuis environ 36 heures, ce qui n’est jamais arrivé précédemment.

Une immersion en réalité augmentée permet aux deux policiers d’assister à une visite récente de la jeune femme au poste de police. Elle y est accueillie par un assistant virtuel à qui elle déclare que quelqu’un a l'intention de la tuer. En virtuel. C’est pourquoi elle veut s’adresser à une personne réelle et ajoute qu’elle n’est pas la première. Muluhi, une de ses amies qui partage les mêmes réseaux, a aussi disparu il y a six semaines. Ferron se souvient avoir entendu parler de cette affaire. Indrapramit lui apprend alors que Beli Handi a quitté le poste de police avant l’arrivée d’un officier et qu’on ne l’a pas revue depuis. Cependant, Ferron remarque que Beli a laissé un morceau de papier avec une inscription. Elle veut savoir s’il est toujours là.

Pour Ferron, l'enquête s'annonce d'autant plus ardue que ses problèmes relationnels avec sa mère lui laissent peu de répit (P.C.)

La mère d’Astrid a élevé trois filles et elle n'a jamais rien laissé se perdre. Elle est morte trop jeune, de façon inattendue, victime d’une pandémie. En tant qu'aînée, c'est à Astrid de s'occuper de Mormor, sa grand-mère, et de veiller sur ses sœurs. À l’exemple de sa mère, elle ne gaspille rien, elle non plus.

Astrid annonce qu’elle va emménager ici, avec Mormor. De son enfance, Astrid garde des souvenirs de violence. À la suite d’une de ces scènes, Mère a chassé son mari qu’on n’a jamais revu.

Un jour, une femme se présente à la porte, vêtue d'une tenue médiévale. "Fylgja", chuchote Mormor. La femme fantôme sourit. Astrid fait glisser du riz au lait et du café noir sur la table. Plus tard, d’autres visiteurs la suivent, mais il est une visite qu’Astrid espère et une autre qu’elle redoute. (P.C.)
